ALL * 25 * DC *10AM *Pierce Mill (in Rock Creek Park at the corner of Park Road/Tilden & Rock Creek Parkway; meet at the north parking lot)

Beach to Creek.  A nice in-town ride with an emphasis on natural scenery.  We’ll ride up Beach Drive, through some nice neighborhoods with some long hills, and down Sligo Creek Parkway. This ride invites ALL pace levels, in the hope that everyone will find someone to ride with.  The ride leader’s pace is C or CC; cue sheets, maps, and a growing cadre of regulars will help those who are faster or slower.  There will be no sweep. We’ll stop at the Takoma Park Co-Op for a quick bite.  Barbara McCann 202/234-2059.

Federal Holiday/Mental Health Day. Ok, we all know that this is not a REAL holiday. So call in sick if your employer does not understand the inner workings of the beltway. We will do the popular route featuring moderate terrain, but no serious climbing. Enjoy a "mental health" day. I will be behind with an honest "CC" pace (those who know me know why). No go in rain or wet roads. I am still hoping for the Michelin award! Larry Bouterie [yatnola@yahoo.com] Cell 301-346-1243 on day of ride.

October 18 Saturday

D/C/CC * 41/21 * MD * 10:30 AM * Big Pool Trailhead

Westward Ho!  This traffic-free and flat route is along the Western Maryland Rail Trail, beautifully paved to a smooth surface, with interesting views of the Potomac River and sedimentary-rock anticlines, as we carve our way through the foothills of the Alleghenies, with breathtaking fall foliage abounding.  At the midway point, the town of Hancock offers good food at bargain prices (no restaurant offers better crab soup than here, and the pies are nationally renowned).  Riders wishing to do the shorter route might want to meet in Hancock, because the route west of Hancock is so supremely beautiful.  Call leader to coordinate this.  History buffs will enjoy a visit to the massive, stone French-and-Indian-War fort two miles from the ride start.  (Directions: I-270 to I-70 west 21 miles beyond Hagerstown to exit 12: Big Pool; turn left off ramp and go a short distance to trailhead on right).   Willis Van Devanter  301/972-7298 or on day of ride  301/704-7863
