How to Display Chinese/Japanese/Korean

To view Chinese fonts in IE or Netscape, follow these steps.

Go to Microsoft Windows download site for IE 4 or Microsoft Global IME 5.0 for Chinese/Japanese/Korean from your IE browser. (Warning: Microsoft may not let you download if you try to access its site with the Netscape browser -- Microsoft's usual cut-throat practice.) Choose "Add-on Windows Internet Features for Internet Explorer 4.0.
After download, IE also automatically installs the fonts for us.
Alternatively, download ip31pkcn.exe (Song and Hei Unicode TTF for GB in Windows 95/98/NT) and ip31pktw.exe Minli Unicode TTF for Big5 in Windows 95/98/NT. Running these programs will incorporate them into IE (but not Netscape).
"MS Song" and "MS Hei" fonts are associated with "Chinese Simplified"; "MingLiU" font is associated with "Chinese Traditional"; "MS Gothic" font is associated with "Japanese"; "GulimChe" font is associated with "Korean"; etc. Alternatively, copy these .ttf fonts to \windows\fonts directory and install these fonts manually from |Control Panel|Fonts|.
To use in Netscape: |Edit|Preferences|Font|, choose MingLiU font as "Chinese Traditional" and Ming Song font as "Chinese Simplified".

To use with IE: |View|fonts|, choose "Chinese Simplified (GB or HZ)" or "Chinese Traditional (BIG5) To view a Chinese document with Netscape: |View|Character Set|. The header section in a better-written html page tells the browser which font to use; thus, the browser can switch fonts by itself without user intervention.

For Big5:     <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=big5">
For GB:       <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=gb_2312-80">
For Japanese: <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=x-sjis">
For Korean:   <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=ks_c_5601-1987">

Note that these steps only allow you to view Chinese characters. To enter them, you need another package (e.g., TwinBridge), but that is another story.

To use TwinBridge, |Chinese Configuration|Chinese Font Setting|, then check the box "Mapping All English Fonts to Chinese".
